Spring Is Here!
Although it’s a crisp 30 degrees, today’s sunshine is getting us excited for spring! Are you planning a spring-break beach trip? Spring can be a great time to visit without the summer crowds. Here are a few special springtime experiences to add to your Cannon Beach getaway!
Whale Watching: The Grey Whales’ annual northward migration begins in March, but spouts are often sighted through late spring. Thousands of whales make their way from calving areas in Baja California to feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. Cannon Beach offers an excellent opportunity to spot these magnificent creatures along their migration route.
Tidepools: After winter storms and heavy seas, spring offers low tides that expose colorful sea life. Look for sea stars, hermit crabs, and sea anemones during minus tides at Haystack Rock or Arcadia Beach.
Tufted Puffins: Another unique experience is the yearly return of the puffins! Each April, these colorful birds return to nest on Haystack Rock. Other seabirds often seen in spring include Common Murres, Pigeon Guillemots, Black Oystercatchers, gulls, and cormorants. The Haystack Rock Awareness Program has staff out during low-tide periods to answer questions and help spot sea life!
